Dutch Spelling and Grammar

Is Dutch your mother tongue and do you rely entirely on your computer’s spell checker when writing a paper? Or do your friends regularly improve your spelling and grammar? Then the Dutch Spelling and Grammar course is something for you!
Please note: this course is for native Dutch speakers.
About the course
The Dutch Spelling and Grammar course explains the most important topics regarding spelling and grammar. Led by an experienced teacher, the basic rules and exceptions are covered first. Then you will work on practical and appealing assignments.
For example, you practise using d’s and t’s, spacing in compound words and common grammatical errors. Work is done in groups and individually.
Learning goals
After completing this course you will:
- be aware of the most important spelling rules.
- be aware of common grammatical errors.
- start a paper, thesis, e-mail or policy document with more confidence.
Method
- In this course, a spelling or grammar rule is first introduced and explained. This is followed by exercises in which the rule has to be applied. The teacher answers questions, provides feedback and additional explanations if needed.
- In addition, reliable (online) resources are shared so that students know where to find answers to their questions even after the course is over.
Time investment
- The course consists of 2 meetings of 3 hours at Babel in Utrecht or in the virtual classroom.
- To make sure that you learn as much as possible from the meetings, we expect you to spend about 2 hours per week on self-study.
Practical
- You will be working with a book. You can order this book on our special book page. Please make sure you have your book ready for the first session.
- If you work or study at Utrecht University you will receive a 15% discount. Please register for the course using your UU email address. Your registration will then be processed automatically.
