Advanced Dutch (B2 → C1)

Would you like to bring your Dutch language skills up to the level required for university studies or to be able to work entirely in Dutch? This course will help you acquire even greater proficiency in Dutch. You will work towards language level C1.
About the course
During the course, you will practise your writing using a variety of written tasks and you will practise your speaking by means of discussions, pair work and brief presentations. The trainer will give you regular feedback on your speaking and writing tasks. In addition to the emphasis on speaking and writing, you will also expand your knowledge of Dutch grammar.
In this course you work towards language level C1. The course is suitable if you have completed our Upper-Intermediate Dutch (B2) course or if you have achieved B2 level through other means. If you have not completed our B2 course or passed the State Exam in Dutch as a Foreign Language, it is important that you take our free placement test. That way we can make sure you are entering at the right level. Furthermore, our courses are aimed at college and university graduates, so the learning pace is relatively fast. Finally, we use English as a supporting language. So it is important that you understand English to understand additional information.
Learning goals
In this course you will work towards level C1.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- express yourself more flexibly and have more confidence to take part in a wide range of conversations and discussions.
- write clear and well-structured short texts on a variety of topics.
- use more idioms and expressions in Dutch.
- recognize implicit meanings within texts.
- express yourself more fluently and spontaneously at a higher level.
Method
- During class, activities will take place in groups, pairs, individually or as a whole group.
- An online learning platform will provide information about the content of the lessons, the homework tasks and suggestions for additional online practice exercises.
Time investment
- This Advanced Dutch C1 course consists of 16 sessions of 1 hours and 45 minutes at Babel or in the virtual classroom.
- To make sure you learn as much as possible, we expect you to spend about three hours a week on self-study. Of course, you will receive study material and assignments for this, which will be discussed during the classes.
Practical
- The language of instruction is Dutch.
- You can order all books required for the course on our special book page. Please make sure you bring your books to the first session.
- You will receive a certificate if you attend at least 80% of the classes.
- If you work or study at Utrecht University you will receive a 15% discount. Please register with your UU email address. Your registration will then be processed automatically.
