About Arabic 1
In this Arabic course, you will learn the basics of the Arabic language. Reading and writing from right to left will become as natural to you as reading and writing from left to right. You will also become familiar with Arabic signs and writing.
During the sessions you will:
- become familiar with Arabic vocabulary and the corresponding grammar rules.
- practice pronouncing the different vowels and consonants. This means that by the end of the course, you will already be able to hold a simple conversation. For example, you can introduce yourself to the other person, but also ask for directions, greet someone, order something, say goodbye, et cetera.

Learning goals

After completing this course you will:
- be able to hold a simple conversation in Arabic.
- have a basic knowledge of Arabic culture and etiquette.
- be ready for the Arabic level 2 course.
At Babel, you will learn Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). This is the official language in the Arab world and is used in the media, books, newspapers and documents. The spoken language is different in every region, but if you master the MSA, it is relatively easy to then learn a dialect of a particular country or area.
Method
- The teacher covers grammar in class. Questions about homework are answered. The lesson often starts with a repetition of words and/or grammar from the previous lesson.
- Work is done in class, individually or in groups on the exercises from the textbook. Sometimes a CD is listened to and then an exercise is made based on it.
- When working with other course members, the emphasis is on speaking and conversational skills.
Time investment
- Arabic 1 consists of 9 sessions of 1,5 hours at Babel in Utrecht or in the virtual classroom.
- To ensure that you learn as much as possible from the classes, you should expect to spend approximately 2 to 3 hours per week on study and the completion of materials and assignments, which will be discussed during the classes.
Practical
- The teacher will speak Arabic as much as possible. Participants can ask questions in Arabic or in Dutch/English
- You can order the necessary books for this course via our website’s Order Books page. You should make sure to have the book before the start of the first lesson.
- You will receive a certificate if you attend at least 8 of the 9 classes.
